Abstract

The calcium economy is a dynamic state influenced by fluxes in dietary calcium intake, intestinal calcium absorption, and renal calcium conservation. The relationship of selected bone-related nutrients to these calcium fluxes exhibits both constructive and destructive interactions that affect the overall state of calcium balance. The basis of the calcium requirement and the impact of vitamin D, protein, phosphorus, sodium, and caffeine on the calcium economy are reviewed. Agai...

Nutrient Effects on the Calcium Economy: Emphasizing the Potassium Controversy1,2
The Journal of Nutrition ; Abstract The calcium economy is a dynamic state influenced by fluxes in dietary calcium intake, intestinal calcium absorption, and renal calcium conservation. The relationship of selected bone-related nutrients to these calcium fluxes exhibits both constructive and destructive interactions that
An Inulin-Type Fructan Enhances Calcium Absorption Primarily via an Effect on Colonic Absorption in Humans1,2
The Journal of Nutrition ; Abstract Calcium absorption efficiency and bone mineral mass are increased in adolescents who regularly consume inulin-type fructans (ITF). The mechanism of action in increasing absorption is unknown but may be related to increased colonic calcium absorption. We conducted a study in young adults
Anatomy of a claim: a case study of calcium absorption claims on dairy products.(Ingredient Technology Focus)(Illustration)
Dairy Foods ; Several years ago Stonyfield Farm, Londonderry, N.H., set out to create a yogurt that would help their consumers absorb more calcium naturally. Along the way, there were many decisions to be made. What calcium absorption booster should be used? What should the wording of the claim be? What are the
The absorbing story of calcium in menopausal women
Nursing BC ; As we age, our ability to absorb calcium declines. Aging, combined with the estrogen reduction that occurs at menopause, results in an estimated 20 to 25% deterioration in calcium absorption in women from 40 to 60 years of age.3 A new study has looked at additional factors that influence calcium
Quantifying human calcium absorption using pharmacokinetic methods
The Journal of Nutrition ; Quantifying Human Calcium Absorption Using Pharmacokinetic Methods1 ABSTRACT Calcium absorption was measured simultaneously by tracer and pharmacokinetic methods in 12 men. The purpose of the study was to calibrate the area under the curve (AUC) for absorptive calcemia to permit comparison or
Modification and validation of a single-isotope radiocalcium absorption test
The Journal of Nuclear Medicine ; This study was done to establish and allow for the influence of body weight on plasma radioactivity after administering radiocalcium to measure calcium absorption. Methods: We administered 5 (mu)Ci ^sup 45^Ca in 20 mg of calcium carrier in 250 ml distilled water to 103 premenopausal volunteers over
Young Adolescents Who Respond to an Inulin-Type Fructan Substantially Increase Total Absorbed Calcium and Daily Calcium Accretion to the Skeleton1-3
The Journal of Nutrition ; Abstract Calcium absorption and whole-body bone mineral content are greater in young adolescents who receive 8 g/d of Synergy, a mixture of inulin-type fructans (ITF), compared with those who received a maltodextrin control. Not all adolescents responded to this intervention, however. We evaluated
Ingestion of guar gum hydrolysate, a soluble fiber, increases calcium absorption in totally gastrectomized rats
The Journal of Nutrition ; Ingestion of Guar Gum Hydrolysate, a Soluble Fiber, Increases Calcium Absorption in Totally Gastrectomized Rats' ABSTRACT Gastrectomy induces osteopenia. We examined the effects of feeding a diet containing soluble dietary fiber, guar gum hydrolysate (GGH, 50 g/kg diet), on intestinal calcium
Calcium intake and absorption decline after Roux-en-Y bypass.(Gastroenterology)
Internal Medicine News ; LAS VEGAS -- Calcium absorption decreases about a third after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, placing patients in jeopardy of clinically significant bone loss, Claudia Riedt said at the annual meeting of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity. A prospective study of 19 severely
Calcium Absorption from Corn Tortilla Is Relatively High and Is Dependent upon Calcium Content and Liming in Mexican Women
The Journal of Nutrition ; ABSTRACT Corn tortillas are the staple food of Mexico. During their preparation, calcium is added to the tortillas; therefore, tortillas are the main source of calcium for a large proportion of the population. The bioavailability of calcium from lime-treated tortillas in humans is not known. The
