Until we happen upon its concluding Toccata passage, this reading of Charles-Marie Widor's Fifth Symphony is as measured, as buoyant, and as controlled an exercise in organ-symphony making as the listener enthused by command and discipline-and the power generated therein-could hope to encounter. A lovely, half-hour plus of playing executed by John Grew sans wheeze, overexcitement (which to the organ's bad luck, typically comes off as religiosity of the worst order, like some mad party line for the angels), ...
