Competition to find home for new portrait gallery

OTTAWA -- The Conservatives have abandoned a planned multimillion-dollar portrait gallery across from Parliament Hill, and will instead hold a competition among nine cities for the right to host the controversial museum.
The federal government has spent roughly $11 million refurbishing the former U.S. embassy, directly across the road from Parliament, since the concept of a Portrait Gallery of Canada was hatched in 2001.
