ABSTRACT

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effects of supplement type and feeding frequency on performance of yearling steers. Twenty-four steers were stratified by initial BW and randomly assigned to one of 3 treatments: 1) molasses-based supplement fed 3 times/wk (ML), 2) citrus pulp-based supplement fed 3 times/wk (C3), or 3) citrus pulp-based supplement fed daily (C7). Supplement intakes were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Limpograss hay was o...

Effects of Feeding Crab Processing Waste and Other Protein Supplements on Growth and Ruminal Characteristics of Steers Fed High-Roughage Diets1
Professional Animal Scientist ; ABSTRACT A 126-d growth trial was conducted with 48 Angus Hereford and Angus Simmental steers (average BW 223 kg). Steers were blocked by body weight and breeding into 8 blocks and randomly allotted within blocks to 6 supplements (8 steers/treatment). Diets were formulated to contain 10.5% CP and
Case study: Effects of restricted and ad libitum intakes of diets containing wheat middlings during the growing phase on performance and carcass composition of early weaned steers
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of restricting the intake of 25% wheat middling diets during the growing phase on finishing phase performance and carcass composition of early weaned steers. In Exp. 1, early weaned Wagyu cross steers were used to compare effects of
Effects of Different Levels of Dry-Rolled Corn or Barley on the Utilization of Medium Quality Meadow Hay with Steers and Performance with Heifers
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract In Trial 1, five Angus-Gelbvieh cross-bred steers (BW = 295 3 kg) fitted with rumen cannulas were used in a 5 5 Latin square design to determine intake and digestibility of medium-quality native grass hay (9.5% CP) when supplemented with 0.25% BW dry-rolled corn (low corn; LC), 0.50% BW
Effects of Processing on Feeding Value of Sprouted Barley and Sprouted Durum Wheat in Growing and Finishing Diets for Beef Cattle
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Feeding values and effects of processing sprouted barley and durum wheat were evaluated in a growing (Exp. 1) and finishing study (Exp. 2). In Exp. 1, 142 crossbred beef steers (328.1 1.7 kg initial BW) were fed for 62 d. Treatments were dry-rolled com; coarse-rolled, sprouted barley (2722
Effects of Tempering and a Yeast-Enzyme Mixture on Intake, Ruminal Fermentation, In Situ Disappearance, Performance, and Carcass Traits in Steers Fed Barley-Based Diets
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Two trials were conducted to evaluate tempering barley and a yeast-enzyme mixture [YEM; Yea-Sacc 8417(9 g/d per head) and Fibrozyme (15 g/d per head); Alltech USA, Nicholasville, KY] on intake, ruminal fermentation, and in situ disappearance in ruminally cannulated steers and on growth,
Performance and carcass value of Holstein steers fed corn distillers grains
Journal of Dairy Science ; One hundred ninety-two 195 kg Holstein steers were allotted randomly to 32 pens. Steers were fed diets of dry rolled corn, corn silage, chopped hay and supplement. Dietary treatments were the basal diet supplemented with urea or soybean meal (SBM) & urea and replacing corn and protein

Effects of Proportion of Supplemental Dietary Crude Protein Supplied by Urea on Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Beef Cattle Fed Steam-Flaked Corn-Based Diets with Wet Corn Gluten Feed1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of level of urea in steam-flaked corn diets containing 25% (DM basis) wet corn gluten feed on performance and carcass characteristics of beef steers. Crossbred steers (n = 240) were blocked by BW (average initial BW = 402.8 10.75 kg) and
Effects of Including Malting Industry Byproducts in Feedlot Diets on Performance and Beef Quality1
Professional Animal Scientist ; Abstract Eighty crossbred steers (436 kg) were used to determine effects of including a malting industry byproduct blend (MB) in finishing diets on performance, DM digestibility, carcass characteristics, meat color, tenderness, and sensory traits. Steers, blocked by BW, were randomly assigned to 1
