In realtà c'è un episodio della vita del musicista che costituisce il suo effettivo esordio sulle scene: la partecipazione alia composizione de Il Sindaco Babbeo, un'opera comica in tre atti rappresentata al teatro milanese Santa Radegonda il 3 marzo 1851.
