Abstract
Calcium absorption efficiency and bone mineral mass are increased in adolescents who regularly consume inulin-type fructans (ITF). The mechanism of action in increasing absorption is unknown but may be related to increased colonic calcium absorption. We conducted a study in young adults designed to evaluate these mechanisms with a kinetic technique using ^sup 42^Ca orally and ^sup 46^Ca dosed i.v. Those who responded to 8 wk of supplementation with 8 g of a mixed short and lon...

Anatomy of a claim: a case study of calcium absorption claims on dairy products.(Ingredient Technology Focus)(Illustration)
Dairy Foods
; Several years ago Stonyfield Farm, Londonderry, N.H., set out to create a yogurt that would help their consumers absorb more calcium naturally. Along the way, there were many decisions to be made. What calcium absorption booster should be used? What should the wording of the claim be? What are the

Vitamin D and the Dual Processes of Intestinal Calcium Absorption
The Journal of Nutrition
; It is well accepted that the intestinal absorption of calcium occurs by 2 distinct mechanisms, a saturable active transport process and a nonsaturable passive diffusion process. The relative importance of these 2 processes and their vitamin D dependency was the subject of recent communications to

Quantifying human calcium absorption using pharmacokinetic methods
The Journal of Nutrition
; Quantifying Human Calcium Absorption Using Pharmacokinetic Methods1 ABSTRACT Calcium absorption was measured simultaneously by tracer and pharmacokinetic methods in 12 men. The purpose of the study was to calibrate the area under the curve (AUC) for absorptive calcemia to permit comparison or

Dietary fructooligosaccharides change the concentration of calbindin-D9k differently in the mucosa of the small and large intestine of rats
The Journal of Nutrition
; Atsutane Ohta,2 Yasuko Motohashi,* Masako Ohtsuki, Masao Hirayama, Takashi Adachi and Keiko Sakuma* ABSTRACT Previously, we confirmed that dietary fructooligosaccharides (FOS) increase calcium absorption in rats. In this study, we examined the influence of FOS feeding on the concentration of

Nondigestible Oligosaccharides Increase Calcium Absorption and Suppress Bone Resorption in Ovariectomized Rats1
The Journal of Nutrition
; ABSTRACT Nondigestible oligosaccharides (NDO) including inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) have been reported to stimulate calcium absorption. Here we report the effect of a mixture of inulin and FOS (Raftilose Synergy 1, Orafti) on calcium and bone metabolism in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. OVX
