INTRODUCTION
Real-time monitoring and improved control of dissolved alumina concentration in the molten cryolite-alumina bath are ever-present needs throughout the aluminum smelting industry. Numerous attempts have been made to develop reliable in-situ alumina sensors for this purpose, principally to avoid the occurrence of the so-called "anode effect" that takes place when the cryolite bath's alumina content becomes too low to support normal electrolysis.
