This article will demonstrate the existence of a deterministic mechanism for dendritic solidification kinetics, especially the generation and development of side branches. The focus is on the influence of an anisotropic kinetic boundary condition on the formation of dendritic side branches. Accurate boundary integrals were developed to simulate two- and three-dimensional solidification. Numerical results reveal that both anisotropic capillarity and anisotropic interfacial attachment kinetics ...

Tip Velocities and Radii of Curvature of Pivalic Acid Dendrites under Convection-Free Conditions
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions
; The growth of dendrites is governed by the interplay between two simple and familiar processes: the irreversible diffusion of energy and the reversible work done in the formation of new surface area via phase transformation. In this article, we present benchmark data using pivalic acid (PVA) in an

Growth of solutal dendrites: A cellular automaton model and its quantitative capabilities
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions
; A model based on the cellular automaton (CA) technique for the simulation of dendritic growth controlled by solutal effects in the low Peclet number regime was developed. The model does not use an analytical solution to determine the velocity of the solid-liquid (SL) interface as is common in other

Metal dendrites in microgravity. (metal dentrite growth during solidification) (Brief Article)
Science News
; It looks like a forest of tiny metal pine trees, says Martin E. Glicksman, a materials scientist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Each time a molten alloy cools, changing from a liquid to a solid, a roughedged carpet of treelike spindles sprouts along the interface where the two

Application of image processing for simulation of mechanical response of multi-length scale microstructures of engineering alloys
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions
; Microstructures of engineering alloys often contain features at widely different length scales. In this contribution, a digital image processing technique is presented to incorporate the effect of features at higher length scales on the damage evolution and local fracture processes occurring at

Eddy-Induced Variability in a Transatlantic Section: Argo Observing System-Gyroscope 0302 Cruise Comparison
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology
; ABSTRACT Ocean hydrological sections provide a very useful mean to study the ocean circulation as well as to determine water mass properties and to estimate fluxes. One basic method for their analysis is the spatial interpolation of data, obtained from a set of predefined stations, into a regular

Journal of Physical Oceanography
; ABSTRACT Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics were calculated from the North Atlantic surface drifter dataset for the years 1993-97 and a high-resolution eddy-resolving configuration of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Parallel Ocean Program (POP) model. The main purpose of the study was to
