Gregorio Paniagua once recorded a collection of variations on La Spagna, an anonymous medieval tune that inspired countless composers. The only recording he ever made for BIS, it filled two LPs (4:6), and with 15 minutes omitted it fit on one CD (9:6). The composers ranged from 15th to 17th centuries but did not include Costanzo Festa (c. 1490-1545), who composed a cycle of 125 variations on the tune.
