A range of evidence indicates that early humans were present in and around Anatolia throughout the Pleistocene epoch (see sidebar). Nonetheless, the existing archaeological record for this period in Anatolia is remarkably sparse. There are many reports of Lower Paleolithic artifacts from across Turkey (Harmankaya and Tanindi 1996), but many of the points on the map below represent artifacts collected from surface contexts, and few have been field checked and verified.
