The effects of atomic hydrogen and flaking on the strength, plasticity, fracture toughness, and hydrogen-induced delayed cracking (HIDC) of a wheel steel were investigated. The results showed that the critical diffusible (C*^sub 0^) or total (C*^sub T^) hydrogen concentration for forming flaking were C*^sub 0^ = 1.3 ppm and C*^sub T^ = 3.7 ppm, respectively. There was no effect of flaking on the strength, plasticity, and fracture toughness if the amount of flaking was low, e.g., diffusible hy...

Effects of Ti addition on cleavage fracture in Nb-Cr-Ti solid-solution alloys
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; The fracture toughness of Nb-Cr-Ti solid-solution alloys has been shown to be greatly improved by Ti addition, but the mechanism of toughness enhancement has not been established. In this study, critical experiments were performed on the tough Nb-Cr-Ti alloy to characterize the crack-tip fracture
Relationship between Fracture Toughness, Fracture Path, and Microstructure of 7050 Aluminum Alloy: Part II. Multiple Micromechanisms-Based Fracture Toughness Model
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; A multiple micromechanisms-based model is developed to quantitatively relate the fracture toughness of partially recrystallized 7XXX aluminum alloys to their fracture surface morphology. The model is verified using the experimental data on partially recrystallized 7050 alloy reported in the
Fracture Toughness of the Lean Duplex Stainless Steel LDX 2101
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; Fracture toughness testing was performed on the recently developed lean duplex stainless steel LDX 2101 (EN 1.4162, UNS S32101). The results were evaluated by master curve analysis, including deriving a reference temperature. The master curve approach, originally developed for ferritic steels, has
What a gas! First star in a new class. (hot enough to break up hydrogen molecules but not to ionize them)
Science News ; A novel breed of star, predicted by theory but never before detected, has emerged in telescope observations and satellite data. The young, unnamed object strikes a rare energy balance: While it's hot enough to break up nearby hydrogen molecules, causing them to dissociate into atomic gas, the star
Buckyball precursors produce ultra-smooth diamond films.(Vaccum Technology)
R & D ; Argonne researchers have developed a new process for growing high-quality diamond films suitable for many applications. Diamond possesses many unique properties, including extreme hardness, high electrical resistance, and chemical inertness. In addition, diamond is transparent over a wide
Analysis of Fracture Toughness in the Transition Temperature Region of API X70 Pipeline Steels Rolled in Two-Phase Region
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; In this study, fracture toughness in the transition temperature region of three API X70 line pipe steels rolled in the two-phase 945; + γ) region was analyzed in accordance with the ASTM E192105 standard test method. Elastic-plastic cleavage fracture toughness (K^sub Jc^) was determined by
Analysis of fracture toughness in the transition-temparature region of an Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; This study is concerned with the analysis of fracture toughness in the transition region of an Mn-Mo-Ni low-alloy steel, in accordance with the ASTM E1921 standard test method. Elastic-plastic cleavage fracture toughness (K^sub Jc^) was determined by three-point bend tests, using precracked Charpy
