Grain growth during the degassing of Ni cryomilled in liquid nitrogen and that cryomilled in liquid argon was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies. The Ni cryomilled in liquid argon was found to have significantly more thermal stability than the Ni cryomilled in liquid nitrogen, with grain sizes of 28 and 62 nm, respectively, after 32 hours of degassing at 723 K. The Ni cryomilled in liquid argon was found to have significantl...

Nitrogen drops in: liquid nitrogen dosing is moving beyond beverage cans into new containers - and new products.
Food Processing ; Liquid nitrogen dosing is moving beyond beverage cans into new containers--and new products. A little drop of liquid nitrogen can make a big splash. Depositing small amounts of liquid nitrogen into a bottle, jar or other airtight package just before sealing can accomplish two things. When the
Fill 'er up with liquid nitrogen
ASEE Prism ; If Abe Hertzberg has his way, some day we'll be refueling our cars at liquid nitrogen stations. Hertzberg, a professor emeritus of aeronautics and astronautics at the University of Washington (UW), heads a research team that has designed and built a vehicle that runs on liquid nitrogen. The vehicle
Cool car running clean on liquid nitrogen
Resource ; Working independently, two groups of researchers have updated the steam engine, using liquid nitrogen instead of water. Ambient air warms and vaporizes liquid nitrogen, generating compressed gas that drives a motor. Carlos Ordonez and his colleagues at the University of North Texas demonstrated the
Spare No Expense
Stage Directions ; If cost is no issue and you're looking for an extraordinary effect, check out liquid nitrogen foggers. Even by casino standards, the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, is pretty spectacular. With two state-of-the-art theatrical venues, over 30 bars and restaurants and, of course, the obligatory
Liquid nitrogen must pass the boiling point to freeze
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ; How Come? Liquid nitrogen must pass the boiling point to freeze By KATHY WOLLARD Los Angeles Times Syndicate Monday, May 5, 2003 "How can liquid nitrogen be so cold but not freeze into a solid?" asks Michael Chapman, a student in Holtsville, N.Y. Solid, liquid or gas? Many things are solids at room
Getting science down cold Students freeze in awe.(Neighbor)
Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL) ; When the rubber glove shattered, the kids pointed and laughed. Then they tried to grab liquid nitrogen droplets as they whizzed by their feet on the tile floor. But their bravado vaporized as Jerry K. Zimmerman, a mechanical engineer at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, readied
Superconductors, Part II.
Poptronics ; Last time, we discussed the fundamental properties of superconductivity. This month, we shall begin with the actual experiments. Although we already touched on this subject, the handling of liquid nitrogen can be dangerous. For safety's sake, let's go over it one more time. Liquid Nitrogen The
Volcanoes in the Classroom: A Simulation of an Eruption Column
Journal of Geoscience Education ; ... as tennis balls and apples can be used to simulate ballistic pyroclasts. After the eruption, students can construct isopleth maps of the clasts. The different densities and aerodynamic shapes of the "clasts" reproduce the distributions of volcanic bombs ...
Liquid nitrogen helps machine difficult materials.(Forming/Processing)
Advanced Materials & Processes ; A technique in which liquid nitrogen is sprayed on hard-to-machine alloys to improve machinability has been developed by Air Products & Chemicals, Lehigh Valley, Pa. Adding liquid nitrogen is said to increase productivity and reduce costs while enabling precision cutting at rates up to twice as
