For too long biblical studies has been in exile, relegated to the stuffy corridors of theological colleges and sundry institutions of the Church and Synagogue. No matter how astute or apparently enlightened such places may be-and their number may be counted on one hand of a two-toed sloth-they are ultimately beholden to a religious institution that has its own agenda inimical to open and sustained research.
