Inertia-Gravity Waves Spontaneously Generated by Jets and Fronts. Part I: Different Baroclinic Life Cycles
|
ABSTRACT
The spontaneous generation of inertia-gravity waves in idealized life cycles of baroclinic instability is investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model. Two substantially different life cycles of baroclinic instability are obtained by varying the initial zonal jet. The wave generation depends strongly on the details of the baroclinic wave's development. In the life cycle dominated by cyclonic behavior, the most conspicuous gravity waves are excited by the upper...

Gravity waves appearing in a high-resolution GCM simulation
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT Global characteristics of gravity waves in the lower stratosphere are examined using a GCM with high resolution in both the horizontal (T106, corresponding to about 120 km) and the vertical (-600 m). The bottom boundary condition of the model is that of an aquaplanet with perpetual

Convectively generated gravity waves and their effect on the cloud environment
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT This study uses a two-dimensional cloud-resolving model to examine how convectively generated gravity waves modify the environment of an isolated convective cloud. The model is initialized with an idealized sounding, and the cloud is initiated by adding a locally buoyant perturbation. The

Vertically propagating gravity waves
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society
; Vertically propagating internal gravity waves play a major role in dynamically linking the lower and middle atmospheres. Among various gravity wave sources, cumulus convection has received much attention as a possible source of nonstationary gravity waves, especially in the Tropics. However,

Generation mechanisms of convectively forced internal gravity waves and their propagation to the stratosphere
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT Characteristics of gravity waves induced by mesoscale convective storms and the gravity wave sources are investigated using a two-dimensional cloud-resolving numerical model. In a nonlinear moist (control) simulation, the convective system reaches a quasi-steady state after 4 h in which

Secondary generation of gravity waves associated with the breaking of mountain waves
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT The generation of small-scale gravity waves associated with the breaking of mountain waves in the stratosphere has been simulated within a fully compressible, nonhydrostatic, two-dimensional numerical model. The model includes the mesosphere and offers sufficiently high spatial resolution
