ABSTRACT

Many isolates of the plant-parasitic nematode Meloidogyne hapla reproduce by facultative meiotic parthenogenesis. Sexual crosses can occur, but, in the absence of males, the diploid state appears to be restored by reuniting sister chromosomes of a single meiosis. We have crossed inbred strains of M. hapla that differ in DNA markers and produced hybrids and F^sub 2^ lines. Here we show that heterozygous M. hapla females, upon parthenogenetic reproduction, produce progeny that s...

Marking Salamander Egg Masses with Visible Fluorescent Elastomer: Retention Time and Effect on Embryonic Development
The American Midland Naturalist ; ABSTRACT.- Although marking methods are available for identifying larval and adult amphibians, techniques for egg masses have not been tested. Individual egg masses can be difficult to relocate and monitor because they are similar in appearance and often found within communal aggregations. We
New nursery protocol designed to eliminate GWSS egg masses.
Wines & Vines ; Northern California wineries and growers were understandably unsettled by the news last spring that nursery plants had made their way into Napa from Riverside County carrying uninvited guests--namely, glassy-winged ...
Brookfield aims at leaf-chomping moths With spraying program uncertain, workers target destructive insects' eggs
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ; Uncertain about the prospects for a wide-scale spraying program to combat gypsy moths next spring, city workers will battle the leaf-eating insects one egg mass at a time in Brookfield parks and on other public land this fall. Crews from the city's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department will
Egg-mass gel of Melanochlamys diomedea (Bergh) protects embryos from low salinity. (opisthobranch gastropod)
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction Many marine invertebrates embed their embryos in gelatinous masses. Because gel eliminates convective transport within masses, it slows the exchange of material between embryos and seawater. Reduced exchange may adversely affect embryos. For example, embryos in the centers of globose
Gypsy moth eggs found
The Nelson Mail ; A potentially devastating incursion of gypsy moth has been averted with the discovery of two moth egg masses on an imported vehicle at Port Nelson, officials say. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry quarantine officers found the egg masses on the spare tyre mounted on the back of a vehicle that
Embryos at the edge of tolerance: effects of environment and structure of egg masses on supply of oxygen to embryos.
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction Supply of oxygen limits the rates of development of crowded embryos with limited diffusional exchange (Strathmann and Strathmann, 1995). Retarded development of internal embryos suggests that egg masses of diverse taxa approach the limits of adequate diffusional exchange (Chaffee and

Intraguild Predation and Competition Mediate Stage-Structured Interactions between Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica) and Upland Chorus Frog (Pseudacris feriarum) Larvae
Copeia ; Although anuran larvae with generalist feeding morphology have traditionally been treated as lower-level consumers, emerging studies indicate that the larvae of many species are intraguild predators of other anurans. We conducted two experiments to examine priority effects of the Wood Frog (Rana
Maternal effects in gypsy moth: only sex ratio varies with population density.
Ecology ; INTRODUCTION Populations of forest caterpillars often fluctuate with a periodicity of 8-11 years. Delayed recovery of the rate of increase for several generations after decline of the populations causes these cyclic dynamics (Myers 1988). A recent model of a maternal-effects hypothesis by Ginzburg
