They're your pets, not souvenirs, say hermit crab sellers

SHIP BOTTOM - Sandy, almost two decades old and as large as a grown man's fist, isn't what people normally think of when they picture a hermit crab.
Clustered among other hermit crabs of varying sizes and ages, Sandy clings to the bars of a wire cage. Another crab, Shelly - just as old and just as large - clambers down to sip water out of a clamshell.
Sandy and Shelly are striking examples of how good care can extend the life of a pet hermit crab to that of a wild crab, which can live to be 30 years old, said Cheryl Kirby, owner of Things-A-Drift, a gift shop in Ship Bottom, Ocean County.
