Lois Whitaker met Veronica in 1964 when the great historian Arnold Toynbee delivered a series of lectures at the University of Colorado. Lois, recently widowed and the mother of three young children, struck up a friendship with Toynbee's second wife which lasted until Veronica's death in 1980.
