ABSTRACT

The dynamics of convectively coupled Kelvin waves and their dependence on convection scheme parameters are studied within a simplified moist general circulation model. The model consists of the primitive equations on the sphere over zonally symmetric aquaplanet, slab mixed layer ocean boundary conditions, and idealized physical parameterizations including gray radiative transfer and a simplified Betts-Miller convection scheme. This framework allows the authors to study the dep...

Observed Relationships between Oceanic Kelvin Waves and Atmospheric Forcing
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) has been implicated as a major source of the wind stress variability that generates basin-scale Kelvin waves in the equatorial Pacific. One source of debate concerning this relationship is the apparent difference in the frequencies of the two processes.
Analysis of Convectively Coupled Kelvin Waves in the Indian Ocean MJO
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT The active convective phase of the Madden-Julian oscillation (hereafter active MJO) comprises enhanced moist deep convection on its own temporal and spatial scales as well as increased variance in convection associated with higher-frequency modes. Vertically Propagating Kelvin Waves and Tropical Tropopause Variability
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT The relationship between local convection, vertically propagating Kelvin waves, and tropical tropopause height variability is examined. This study utilizes both simulations of a global primitive-equation model and global observational datasets. Regression analysis with the data shows that
Oceanic Kelvin waves and the Madden-Julian oscillation
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT The relationship between the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the tropical troposphere, and the Kelvin waves that dominate the variability of the equatorial thermocline in the central and eastern Pacific Oceans is explored. The Kelvin waves
The Dynamics of Idealized Convection Schemes and Their Effect on the Zonally Averaged Tropical Circulation
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT In this paper, the effect of a simple convection scheme on the zonally averaged tropical general circulation is examined within an idealized moist GCM to obtain broad classifications of the influence of convection on the Tropics. This is accomplished with a simplified convection scheme in
