Tracking Changes in Jack London's Representation of the Railroad Tramp

Between 1897 and 1907, Jack London wrote a series of essays and short stories about tramps that were based upon his own experiences on the road. In his first accounts of tramping, London emphasized the socioeconomic conditions that produce transiency and highlighted the hypocrisy of those who would explain the tramp in terms of individual deviancy. But in 1906-07, London wrote a series of articles for Cosmopolitan magazine, later published in a single volume as The Road, in which he largely set aside these concerns and instead recast his tramp experiences as tales of adventure and physical ...
