ABSTRACT: Pilot-scale experiments were continuously carried out for more than 9 months to study the excess biomass reduction effect using a biophase-separation bioreactor, which was designed based on food-chain theory. By separating the biophase in the wastewater treatment system, bacteria, protozoa, and metazoa could be separated from each other and dominated in different microbial communities. After degrading organic matter, bacteria were consumed by protozoa or metazoa in the following pro...

Effects of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Limitation on the Activated Sludge Biomass in a Kraft Mill Biotreatment System
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Unlike wastewater, pulp and paper mill effluents are generally severely deficient in bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus. The influence of nitrogen and phosphorus limitations on steady-state or typical pulp and paper mill activated sludge floc properties and performance was studied using
Activated sludge and other aerobic suspended culture processes
Water Environment Research ; LITERATURE REVIEW Introduction In preparing the literature review on activated sludge and other aerobic suspended culture processes, it is always a challenge to know where to draw the line as to what is an activated sludge or related process and what is simply a process relating to biodegradation

A comparison of physical properties of synthetic sludge with activated sludge
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Conducting physical and chemical tests with activated sludge is difficult because of its constantly changing properties. To overcome this difficulty a synthetic sludge that physically and chemically resembles activated sludge was created. In this study, the physical properties of
The Effect of Wastewater Cations on Activated Sludge Characteristics: Effects of Aluminum and Iron in Floc
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Wastewater samples collected from seven wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were characterized to assess the impacts of wastewater cations on the activated sludge process. The cations included in this study were sodium (Na potassium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, aluminum (Al), and iron
Assessing Microbial Communities for a Metabolic Profile Similar to Activated Sludge
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: To search for reliable testing inocula alternatives to activated sludge cultures, several model microbial consortia were compared with activated sludge populations for their functional diversity. The evaluation of the metabolic potential of these mixed inocula was performed using the
Filamentous Scum Bacteria in Activated Sludge Plants: Detection and Identification Quality by Conventional Activated Sludge Microscopy versus Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Detection of filamentous bacteria morphotypes involved in scum formation in activated sludge wastewater treatment plants by conventional sludge microscopy is often doomed to fail because of morphological and taxonomical variations. The aim of this study is to compare detection,

Solutions - for People, Processes and Paper ; Manual on the Causes and Control of Activated Sludge Bulking and Foaming, Second Edition by D. Jenkins, M.G. Richard and G.T. Daigger This book discusses and dissects all aspects of activated sludge solids separation problems. It begins with a study of the fundamental physical and chemical
The activated sludge biomolecular database
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Tremendous advances have recently been made in the development of molecular tools for analysis of microbial populations in the environment. However, an appropriate scientific basis for quantification of new molecular data must exist to effectively use these tools toward increased
Forward thinking: an activated sludge treatment plant increases capacity in increments, resulting in big savings and smoother future expansions.(Brief Article)
Pollution Engineering ; The Delhi Charter Township wastewater treatment plant, located in Holt, Mich., requires periodic expansions like many similar plants. What makes Delhi plant unique is its planning: rather than doing extensive expansions every 20 years, the engineers and superintendents do smaller projects over
