ABSTRACT

The Red Sea outflow exhibits strong seasonal variability in outflow transport due to effects of monsoon winds and seasonal fluctuations in buoyancy forcing. As it descends the continental slope in the western Gulf of Aden, it entrains significantly less-dense near-surface water, which itself varies on seasonal time scales. High-resolution hydrographic and direct velocity data collected during the 2001 Red Sea Outflow Experiment (REDSOX) are used herein to characterize and quan...

Mixing and Entrainment in the Red Sea Outflow Plume. Part I: Plume Structure
Journal of Physical Oceanography ; ABSTRACT When the salty and heavy water of the Red Sea exits from the Strait of Bab el Mandeb, it continues downslope into the Gulf of Aden mainly along two channels. The 130-km-long "Northern Channel" (NC) is topographically confined and is typically only 5 km wide. In it, the Red Sea plume shows
Numerical Simulation of the Red Sea Outflow Using HYCOM and Comparison with REDSOX Observations
Journal of Physical Oceanography ; ABSTRACT The outflow of warm, salty, and dense water from the Red Sea into the western Gulf of Aden is numerically simulated using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). The pathways of the modeled overflow, temperature, salinity, velocity profiles from stations and across sections, and

Red Sea Circulation
APS Review Gas Market Trends ; The movements of the waters are of great irregularity and complexity, rendering navigation difficult and dangerous. Who mined the Red Sea and why?
U.S. News & World Report ; Eastern and Western powers, in a rare show of cooperation, cranked up mine-sweeping efforts in one of the world's busiest waterways to halt a series of explosions that appeared to be the work of Mideast radicals. Bottom Layer Turbulence in the Red Sea Outflow Plume
Journal of Physical Oceanography ; ABSTRACT Turbulence in the Red Sea outflow plume in the western Gulf of Aden was observed with an upward-looking, five-beam, 600-kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The "Bottom Lander" ADCP was deployed on the seafloor in two narrow, topographically confined outflow channels south of Bab
