Fumaric acid esters (FAE) are chemical compounds derived from the unsaturated dicarbonic acid, fumaric acid. Fumaric acid is a white crystalline powder with a characteristic acidic taste. It is used as a food additive and is commonly found as flavoring agent in cakes and sweets. Fumaric acid is poorly absorbed and believed to pass through the body without causing any effects. However, esters of fumaric acid (FAEs), such as monoethylfumarate(MEF), monomethylfumarate (MMF), diethylfumarate (DEF) and dimethylfumarate(DMF) are potent chemicals and have been used in the treatment of psoriasis in ...
