ABSTRACT

A previously isolated fission yeast γ-tubulin mutant containing apparently stabilized microtubules proliferated at an approximately identical rate as wild type, yet the mutant mitosis spindle dynamics were aberrant, particularly the kinetochore microtubule dynamics. Progression through mitosis in the mutant, however, resulted in mostly accurate chromosome segregation. In the absence of the spindle assembly checkpoint gene, mad2^sup +^, the spindle dynamics in the γ-t...

Suppressor Analysis of a Histone Defect Identifies a New Function for the Hda1 Complex in Chromosome Segregation
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Histones are essential for the compaction of DNA into chromatin and therefore participate in all chromosomal functions. Specific mutations in HTA1, one of the two Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes encoding histone H2A, have been previously shown to cause chromosome segregation defects,
RNA interference, transposons, and the centromere
Plant Cell ; INSIGHT Centromeres evolve rapidly and display a remarkable lack of sequence conservation (Henikoff et al., 2001). They can be small (125 bp in Saccharomyces cerevisiae) or large (9 million bp in maize) and show a relatively ordered arrangement of long repeats (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) or a wider
Meiotic Chromosome Synapsis in Yeast Can Occur Without Spo11-Induced DNA Double-Strand Breaks
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Proper chromosome segregation and formation of viable gametes depend on synapsis and recombination between homologous chromosomes during meiosis. Previous reports have shown that the synaptic structures, the synaptonemal complexes (SCs), do not occur in yeast cells with the SPO11 gene
Altered Dosage and Mislocalization of Histone H3 and Cse4p Lead to Chromosome Loss in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Cse4p is an essential histone H3 variant in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that defines centromere identity and is required for proper segregation of chromosomes. In this study, we investigated phenotypic consequences of Cse4p mislocalization and increased dosage of histone H3 and Cse4p, and
Molecular Characterization of teflon, a Gene Required for Meiotic Autosome Segregation in Male Drosophila melanogaster
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Drosophila melanogaster males lack recombination and have evolved a mechanism of meiotic chromosome segregation that is independent of both the chiasmatic and achiasmatic segregation systems of females. The teflon (tef) gene is specifically required in males for proper segregation of
