Short Communication: Ability of Cultured Mammary Epithelial Cells in a Bicameral System to Secrete Milk Fat
|
ABSTRACT
Mammary epithelial cells from lactating cows were cultured onto inserts coated with type I collagen. Every second day, the rates of fatty acid synthesis and secretion were determined by measuring the amount of [^sup 14^C]-labeled sodium acetate incorporated into lipids over a 4-h period. The [^sup 14^C]-containing lipids were identified by thin layer chromatography fractionation. In parallel, the integrity of the cell layer was evaluated by measurement of transepithelial elect...

Effects of Long-Chain Fatty Acids on Cytosolic Triacylglycerol Accumulation and Lipid Droplet Formation in Primary Cultured Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Mammary epithelial cells have recently been shown to express and secrete leptin into milk and to accumulate triacylglycerol (TAG) in cytosol. We examined the effects on the accumulation of cytosolic TAG of free fatty acid addition to the medium bathing bovine mammary epithelial cells

Synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins in bovine mammary epithelial cells
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology
; Dear Editor: Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a highly organized network of proteins, proteoglycans, and glycosaminoglycans, which surrounds cells in many tissues. Numerous studies with rodents have shown unequivocally that normal cell-matrix interactions are indispensable for the survival, growth,

Relationship Between Glucose Transport and Metabolism in Isolated Bovine Mammary Epithelial Cells
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Glucose transport by isolated bovine mammary epithelial cells involves translocation across the cell membrane into a compartment that exchanges slowly with the bulk cytosol. The significance to glucose metabolism of this compartmentalization was examined by generation, modeling, and

Leptin Does Not Act Directly on Mammary Epithelial Cells in Prepubertal Dairy Heifers
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The mammary gland of prepubertal dairy heifers consists of parenchyma expanding into the stroma, a matrix of connective and adipose tissue. High planes of nutrition increase stromal mass, but inhibit growth of parenchyma. The parenchyma consists of epithelial cells proliferating in

Positive regulation of normal and tumoral mammary epithelial cell proliferation by fibroblasts in coculture
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology
; SUMMARY In the mammary gland, mesenchymal-epithelial interactions are of paramount importance during normal and tumoral developments. We have studied the paracrine growth regulation of a variety of breast epithelial cells in coculture with normal or pathological breast fibroblasts. Two models of

Short Communication: Intramammary Infusion of IGF-I Increases Bromodeoxyuridine Labeling in Mammary Epithelial Cells of Prepubertal Heifers*
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT When dairy heifers are fed to gain more than 900 g of body weight/d, they have less mammary parenchymal DNA at puberty but more insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in serum. This negative relationship between serum IGF-I concentration and mammary epithelial cell proliferation is in

Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli Cause Deviating Expression Profiles of Cytokines and Lactoferrin Messenger Ribonucleic Acid in Mammary Epithelial Cells
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Pathogens invading the mammary gland cause a complex signaling network that activates the early immune defense and leads to an outcome of inflammation symptoms. To examine the importance of mammary epithelial cells in these regulations and interactions resulting in a pathogen-related
