ABSTRACT

The nonlinear effects of inbreeding were studied by comparing linear and curvilinear regression models of phenotypic performances on inbreeding coefficients for production traits (milk, fat, and protein yields) of Hoistein cows in their first lactation. Three different regression models (linear, quadratic, and cubic) were introduced separately into a single-trait, single-lactation, random regression test-day model. The significance of the different regression coefficients was ...

Linear and Curvilinear Effects of Inbreeding on Production Traits for Walloon Holstein Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The nonlinear effects of inbreeding were studied by comparing linear and curvilinear regression models of phenotypic performances on inbreeding coefficients for production traits (milk, fat, and protein yields) of Hoistein cows in their first lactation. Udder Health Shows Inbreeding Depression in Danish Holsteins
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to estimate inbreeding depression for udder health using records on mastitis incidence and somatic cell count (SCC). Data were selected based on a pedigree completeness index so that inbreeding coefficients were reliable. Average inbreeding was 3.3%. The
Effect of Incomplete Pedigrees on Estimates of Inbreeding and Inbreeding Depression for Days to First Service and Summit Milk Yield in Holsteins and Jerseys
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT A method to measure completeness of pedigree information is applied to populations of Holstein (registered and grade) and Jersey (largely registered) cows. Inbreeding coefficients where missing ancestors make no contribution were compared to a method using average relationships for missing
Inbreeding Depression on Female Fertility and Calving Ease in Spanish Dairy Cattle
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Inbreeding depression on female fertility and calving ease in Spanish dairy cattle was studied by the traditional inbreeding coefficient (F) and an alternative measurement indicating the inbreeding rate 916;F) for each animal. Data included records from 49,497 and 62,134 cows for fertility
(book reviews)
Ecology ; Does breeding between close relatives occur frequently in natural populations of plants and animals? In nature, does inbreeding or outbreeding cause detrimental depression of fitness of offspring? Is there an optimal level of inbreeding or outbreeding? These are a few of the fascinating questions
Inbreeding Effects on Milk Production, Calving Performance, Fertility, and Conformation in Irish Holstein-Friesians
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the effect of inbreeding on milk production, somatic cell count, fertility, survival, calving performance, and cow conformation in Irish Holstein-Friesian pluriparous dairy cows. Inbreeding was included in a linear mixed model as either a class
Inbreeding depression and maternal effects in Aquilegia caerulea, a partially selfing plant.
Ecology ; INTRODUCTION Inbreeding depression, defined as the lower success of seeds produced from self- compared to outcross-pollination, has long been recognized as a potentially important evolutionary force (Darwin 1876). However, early theoretical models predicted that inbreeding depression must be strong
Nonparametric Analysis of the Impact of Inbreeding on Production in Jersey Cows
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Under dominance, the relationship between a quantitative trait and the inbreeding coefficient (F) is expected to be linear. Epistasis involving dominance effects or selection against inbred individuals can produce nonlinear patterns in the form of inbreeding depression. The form of the
Analysis of Inbreeding and Its Relationship with Functional Longevity in Canadian Dairy Cattle
Journal of Dairy Science ; Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the level of inbreeding and its relationship to the functional survival of Canadian dairy breeds by using a Weibull proportional hazard model. Data consisted of records from 72,385 cows in 1,505 herds from 2,499 sires for Jerseys, 112,723 cows in 1,482
Quantitative genetics of inbreeding in a synthetic maize population. (Crop Breeding, Genetics & Cytology).(Statistical Data Included)
Crop Science ; INBREEDING DEPRESSION in maize is a ubiquitous phenomenon found in all populations and for most measurable traits. Significant inbreeding depression was found for 19 of 22 phenotypic and agronomic characters evaluated in six agronomic studies of inbreeding in maize (Benson and Hallauer, 1994;
