Abstract

Objective. To evaluate the outcome of active induction of labor for isolated oligohydramnios in low-risk term gestation.

Methods. This retrospective study analyzed the obstetric and perinatal outcome of 412 singleton term pregnancies with cephalic presentation and no maternal risk factors or fetal abnormalities. Two groups were compared: 206 deliveries after induced labor for isolated oligohydramnios, and 206 deliveries matched for gestational age following spontaneous ...

Human [beta]-defensin-2: A natural antimicrobial peptide present in amniotic fluid participates in the host response to microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Abstract Objective. Human β-defensin-2 (HBD-2) is a potent antimicrobial peptide that is part of the innate immune response. The purpose of this study was to determine whether HBD-2 is present in amniotic fluid and if its concentration changes with microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity
Amniocentesis results and novel proteomic analysis in a case of occult candidal chorioamnionitis
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Abstract We report a case of subclinical Candida albicans chorioamnionitis with mid-trimester cervical dilation diagnosed by amniotic fluid culture and Gram stain. Proteomic analysis of amniotic fluid demonstrated protein biomarkers previously associated only with bacterial intra-amniotic
Second-trimester amniotic fluid interleukin-10 concentration predicts preterm delivery
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Objective: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an inflammatory cytokine that has been shown to be elevated in the amniotic fluid of patients with preterm labor. On the other hand, interleukin-10 (IL-10) is an anti-inflammatory cytokine that has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of other cytokines. We
Gender differences in amniotic fluid cytokine levels*
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Objective: Placental trophoblast invasion and amniotic fluid cytokine receptor levels have been reported to vary with fetal gender. We investigated whether fetal gender affects amniotic fluid levels of the inflammatory cytokines intcrleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10 and the pro-angiogenesis cytokine
Amniotic fluid levels of immunoreactive monocyte chemotactic protein-1 increase during term parturition
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Objective: Parturition is characterized by an influx of inflammatory cells into gestational tissues, a phenomenon conducive to increased myometrial contractility, cervical ripening and decidual/membrane activation. Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), a potent chemoattractant and activator of
Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 is increased in the amniotic fluid of women who deliver preterm in the presence or absence of intra-amniotic infection
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Abstract Objective. Pro-inflammatory chemokines have been associated with preterm parturition. Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) is a chemokine capable of recruiting monocytes/macrophages into sites of inflammation, as well as stimulating the respiratory burst required for macrophage
Maternal and fetal inflammatory responses in unexplained fetal death
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Objective: The role of intra-amniotic infection in the etiology of fetal death has been proposed. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC) and the frequency of maternal and/or fetal inflammation in patients presenting with a fetal

Differences in amniotic fluid patterns and fetal biometric parameters in third trimester pregnancies with and without diabetes
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Abstract Objective. The amniotic fluid index (AFI) has been increasingly used in the assessment of fetal well-being. We conducted the study to evaluate and compare the amniotic fluid index in third trimester normal and diabetic human pregnancy and to assess the correlation between the AFI and the
Antibiotic administration to patients with preterm premature rupture of membranes does not eradicate intra-amniotic infection
Journal of Maternal - Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ; Abstract Objective. Antibiotic administration has become part of the standard of care for patients with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Yet, the natural history of intrauterine infection/inflammation during antibiotic therapy remains largely unknown. This study was conducted to
