Linnaeus sent two dozen of his best students to explore the world on his behalf.
IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, THE SWEDISH NATURALIST CAROLUS
Linnaeus imposed order on what had been a chaotic world of plants, animals, and minerals. He established a radical system of two-part Latin names-genus and specific epithet-for the natural world that scientists still use today. An NEH-supported exhibition at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia marks the tercentenary of Linnaeus's birth and examines his work and the work of his followers in North America.
