ABSTRACT: The present study explored the application of a 20-kHz ultrasound unit for the disinfection of domestic wastewater. Experiments were conducted in batch with an ultrasound probe. The disinfection efficiency of fecal coliform increased with ultrasound power input from 0.003 log kill/min at 70 W/L to 1.8 log kill/min at 1250 WIL. Disinfection data are well-described by the Chick-Watson disinfection model (coefficient of dilution, n = 2.0) using ultrasound power in place of chemical con...

Peracetic Acid Disinfection: A Feasible Alternative to Wastewater Chlorination
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: The paper summarizes the results of a bench-scale study to evaluate the feasibility of using peracetic acid (PAA) as a substitute for sodium hypochlorite both for discharge into surface water and for agricultural reuse. Trials were carried out with increasing doses (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, and 15
Effects of Wastewater Disinfection on Waterborne Bacteria and Viruses
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Wastewater disinfection is practiced with the goal of reducing risks of human exposure to pathogenic microorganisms. In most circumstances, the efficacy of a wastewater disinfection process is regulated and monitored based on measurements of the responses of indicator bacteria. However,
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of the Effects of Reactor Configuration on Disinfection Efficiency
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: The efficacy of disinfection processes in water purification systems is governed by several key factors, including reactor hydraulics, disinfectant chemistry, and microbial inactivation kinetics. The objective of this work was to develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to

Analysis of Microbiological Characteristics of Wastewater Along the Polishing Sequence of a Treatment Plant
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Microbial populations were studied by plate counts and flow cytometry along the polishing sequence of a wastewater plant. The comparison between plate count and flow cytometry showed comparable trends, but plate counts detected less than 10% of the total intact bacteria counted by flow
