The formation of cracks in a funnel mold of thin-slab casting is investigated using metallographic studies and mathematical models. In Part II of this two-part article on thin-slab casting molds, short longitudinal cracks near the meniscus region of a thin-slab funnel mold are studied metallurgically. X-ray analyses revealed the formation of Cu-Zn brass on the copper matrix at high temperature where the crack initiated. Heat-transfer and thermal-elastic-viscoplastic stress models described in...

Predicting the performance of refractory linings with modeling.(Ceramic Industry 1997-98 Data Book & Buyers Guide Issue)(Buyers Guide)
Ceramic Industry ; EFFECTIVE USE OF FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS REQUIRES AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE THERMOMECHANIC BEHAVIOR OF REFRACTORY LINING MATERIALS. Refractory lining materials can undergo high levels of mechanical stress loading at elevated temperatures. The manner in which a given refractory material behaves under

Tips on good refractory practice for aluminum - melting furnaces. (Ceramics & Refractories/Insulation).
Industrial Heating ; Refractories in contact with molten aluminum must resist aluminum penetration, chemical reaction with the aluminum, mechanical abuse, thermal spalling and attack by fluxes. Good refractory practice can help minimize these problems. Melting aluminum in a reverberatory furnace involves heating the
Bubble alumina retains integrity at high temperatures
Advanced Ceramics Report ; Vulcan Refractories has launched a new group of 'Vulcasil' materials designed to withstand the high temperatures and provide the thermal shock resistance demanded by specialist furnace and kiln users. The high grade bubble alumina, 'Vulcasil HRP 27', 'VR 271' and 'VR 251' materials provide the high
Using microtherm microporous insulation in smelter applications
JOM ; Microtherm is effective in reducing shell temperatures in confined spaces where compression is severe and much insulation is required. This material can prove beneficial for applications such as cement and lime rotary kiln transition and hot zones; copper converters and anode furnaces; steel and
Thermal and mechanical behavior of copper molds during thin-slab casting (I): Plant trial and mathematical modeling
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; Three-dimensional (3-D) finite-element thermal-stress models have been developed to predict temperature, distortion, and residual stress in the mold of continuous casters of thin steel slabs, comparing both funnel-shaped and parallel molds. The mold shape and high casting speed leads to higher mold
Model's role is simply to exist.(News)
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England) ; Byline: By Steve Hughes I am intrigued by the announcement that a model, in the shape of Emma B, has been declared the hot new face of Formula One. Call me old fashioned, but I am not quite sure precisely what that means. What I don't understand is exactly what the hot face of anything is, and what
Proper refractory dry out is key to optimum service life. (Ceramics & Refractories/Insulation).
Industrial Heating ; A final product that will perform to its design capability and meet or exceed user expectations requires a combined effort of the refractories manufacturer, the installer and the dry-out contractor. There have been significant improvements in castable and plastic refractories over the past 35 years
