USS Washington (BB-56) was built by the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Her keel was laid 14 June 1938 and she launched 1 June 1940 under the sponsorship of Miss Virginia Marshall of Spokane, Washington, a direct descendant of former Chief Justice Marshall. The ship was placed in commission 15 May 1941 when Capt. Howard H. J. Benson, USN, assumed command.
