Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., is the highest-profile victim in the latest round of base closings. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended Aug. 24, 2006, that the famous Army hospital shut down and merge with the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., by 2011.
