Executive Summary
Baton Rouge Coal and Towing Company, founded by Joshua (J.C.) Wemer, Sr. in 1902, was a river steamboat and barge operation. The company originally serviced steamboats that used coal for fuel on the Mississippi River. The coal was mined in the Pittsburgh area, loaded on barges, transported down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers by stern-wheel steamboats, and then stored along the river banks. Finally, the coal was put on barges to directly supply river steamboats or used for residential and other commercial activities around Baton Rouge.
