ABSTRACT

Genetic differentiation between the largely sympatric molecular forms M and S of Anopheles gambiae appears mostly limited to division 6 and part of division 5 of the X chromosome. This region is adjacent to the centromere and includes the rDNA that was used to define these forms. This localized differentiation between populations that experience gene flow strongly suggests that this region contains genes responsible for reproductive isolation. Regions adjacent to centromeres a...

Structural diversity of cancer-related and non-cancer-related prostate-specific antigen
Clinical Chemistry ; Background: Heterogeneity among the various molecular forms of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has not been well characterized, despite the critical importance of PSA in the detection of prostate cancer. The purpose of this study was to examine PSA heterogeneity in cancerous and noncancerous
Ecological Zones Rather Than Molecular Forms Predict Genetic Differentiation in the Malaria Vector Anopheles gambiae s.s. in Ghana
Genetics ; ABSTRACT The malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae s.s. is rapidly becoming a model for studies on the evolution of reproductive isolation. Debate has centered on the taxonomic status of two forms (denoted M and S) within the nominal taxon identified by point mutations in the X-linked rDNA region.
The variable expression of the C^sub 4/5^ complex of human butyrylcholinesterase and body mass index
Human Biology ; Abstract The activity of a supposedly heteromeric complex (C^sub 4/5^) of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; EC 3.1.1.8) was analyzed in relation to body mass index (BMI). The activities of the C^sub 4/5^ and C^sub OF^ (other molecular forms) bands in CHE2 C5- (n = 447) and CHE2 C5+ (n = 88) individuals
Determination of Ultrafilterable Prolactin: Elimination of Macroprolactin Interference With a Monomeric Prolactin-Selective Sample Pretreatment
Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine ; Context.-Macroprolactin (macroPRL), present in as many as 25% of serum specimens with elevated serum prolactin concentrations, can cause apparent hyperprolactinemia in the absence of clinical features and lead to unnecessary clinical, laboratory, and neuroradiological work-ups. Objective.-To

The effects of pH and lonic strength on the aggregation of bacteriochlorophll c in aqueous organic media: The posibility of two kinds of aggregates
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; ABSTRACT The aggregation behavior of two homologs of bacteriochlorophyll c (BChI c) in various media was investigated for the effects of pH and salt, and the corresponding structures were analyzed by Fourier transform (FT)-IR spectroscopy. Detection of anti-Yt antibodies using a sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay
British Journal of Biomedical Science ; Abstract: A specific, sensitive and semi-quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is described to detect anti-Yt^sup a^ antibodies in human serum. Recombinant acetylcholinesterase (AChE E.C.3.1.1.7) was employed as the coating antigen in the microtitre plate and horseradish peroxidase
Ritalin may work better as purer compound.(Brief Article)
Science News ; Half of every dose of the drug Ritalin, taken by an estimated 2 million children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), may contribute nothing to its therapeutic effect, while possibly adding to its side effects, say researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y.
Development of Sensitive Immunoassays for Free and Total Human Glandular Kallikrein 2
Clinical Chemistry ; Background: Free and total human kallikrein 2 (hK2) might improve the discrimination between prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Concentrations of hK2 are 100-fold lower than concentrations of prostatespecific antigen (PSA); therefore, an hK2 assay must have a low detection limit and
