ABSTRACT

In most organisms, meiotic chromosome segregation is dependent on crossovers (COs), which enable pairs of homologous chromosomes to segregate to opposite poles at meiosis I. In mammals, the majority of meiotic chromosome segregation errors result from a lack of COs between homologs. Observations in Homo sapiens and Drosophila melanogaster have revealed a second class of exceptional events in which a CO occurred near the centromere of the missegregated chromosome. We show that ...

Centromere-Proximal Crossovers Are Associated With Precocious Separation of Sister Chromatids During Meiosis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Saccharomyces cerevisiae Donor Preference During Mating-Type Switching Is Dependent on Chromosome Architecture and Organization
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Saccharomyces mating-type (MAT) switching occurs by gene conversion using one of two donors, HMLα and HMRa, located near the ends of the same chromosome. MATa cells preferentially choose HMLα, a decision that depends on the recombination enhancer (RE) that controls recombination
Nuclear genes that encode mitochondrial proteins for DNA and RNA metabolism are clustered in the Arabidopsis genome(W)
Plant Cell ; The plant mitochondrial genome is complex in structure, owing to a high degree of recombination activity that subdivides the genome and increases genetic variation. The replication activity of various portions of the mitochondrial genome appears to be nonuniform, providing the plant with an ability
BIOTECHNOLOGY: 35 EUROPEAN LABORATORIES REVEAL SECRET LIFE OF YEAST
Europe Environment ; Summary: For the first time ever, the chromosome of a living organism has been completely sequenced. After two years of work, 35 European laboratories working together under the Biotechnology Action Programme (BAP) have succeeded in establishing the complete sequence of yeast chromosome III. This
Absent protein causes chromosomal breakup.(research on causes of mutations)
Science News ; Perhaps even more than fans of Godzilla films, fruit fly biologists love mutants. For decades, these investigators have studied strange and unusual examples of the fast-breeding insect, both natural mutants and those induced by chemicals or X rays. In 1968, researchers captured an intriguing mutant
High Rates of "Unselected" Aneuploidy and Chromosome Rearrangements in tel1 mec1 Haploid Yeast Strains
Genetics ; ABSTRACT The yeast TEL1 and MEC1 genes (homologous to the mammalian ATM and ATR genes, respectively) serve partially redundant roles in the detection of DNA damage and in the regulation of telomere length. Haploid yeast tel1 mec1 strains were subcultured nonselectively for ~200 cell divisions. The

Rapid Evolution of Yeast Centromeres in the Absence of Drive
Genetics ; ABSTRACT To find the most rapidly evolving regions in the yeast genome we compared most of chromosome III from three closely related lineages of the wild yeast Saccharomyces paradoxus. Unexpectedly, the centromere appears to be the fastest-evolving part of the chromosome, evolving even faster than
Sister Chromatids Are Often Incompletely Aligned in Meristematic and Endopolyploid Interphase Nuclei of Arabidopsis thaliana
Genetics ; ABSTRACT We analyzed whether sister chromatids are continuously aligned in meristematic and endopolyploid Arabidopsis interphase nuclei by studying sister-chromatid alignment at various chromosomal positions. FISH with individual BACs to flow-sorted 4C root and leaf nuclei frequently yielded more
