MARITIME SHIPBREAKING: LAW AND POLICY Part III
|
This is the final article in a series of three articles on "Shipbreaking" by the same authors.
The maritime industry has more than 46,000 vessels registered in 150 nations around the globe. These ships have a life span of some 25-30 years. As vessels are retired, they must be disposed of - the practice of shipbreaking. The shipbreaking industry supplies about 5 percent of the demand for scrap metal sold annually.

The Genetic Architecture of Life Span and Mortality Rates: Gender and Species Differences in Inbreeding Load of Two Seed-Feeding Beetles
Genetics
; ABSTRACT We examine the inbreeding load for adult life span and mortality rates of two seed beetle species, Callosobruchus maculatus and Stator limbatus. Inbreeding load differs substantially between males and females in both study populations of C. maculatus-life span of inbred females was 9-13%

High-Resolution Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Affecting Increased Life Span in Drosophila melanogaster
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Limited life span and senescence are near-universal characteristics of eukaryotic organisms, controlled by many interacting quantitative trait loci (QTL) with individually small effects, whose expression is sensitive to the environment. Analyses of mutations in model organisms have shown

A Measurable Increase in Oxidative Damage Due to Reduction in Superoxide Detoxification Fails to Shorten the Life Span of Long-Lived Mitochondrial Mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans
Genetics
; ABSTRACT SOD-1 and SOD-2 detoxify superoxide in the cytoplasm and mitochondria. We find that, although several long-lived mutants of Caenorhabditis elegans have increased SOD levels, this phenomenon does not correlate with life span or growth rate. Furthermore, although disruption of sod-1 or -2

A Functional Analysis Reveals Dependence on the Anaphase-Promoting Complex for Prolonged Life Span in Yeast
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Defects in anaphase-promoting complex (APC) activity, which regulates mitotic progression and chromatin assembly, results in genomic instability, a hallmark of premature aging and cancer. We investigated whether APC-dependent genomic stability affects aging and life span in yeast.

Study:Having sons might shorten mother's life span; 34 weeks:Researchers use data from 1640-1870
Telegraph - Herald (Dubuque)
; WASHINGTON (AP) -"My son will be the death of me yet." The familiar lament by mothers everywhere might have a kernel of scientific truth, researchers say. A study analyzing family church records in earlier centuries found that having sons shortened the life span of Finnish mothers by about 34 weeks

Reproduction decreases life span in the giant waterbug (Belostoma flumineum)
The American Midland Naturalist
; ABSTRACT.-Senescence is the result of age-specific trade-offs among life history traits. Energetic trade-offs among various components of an organism's energy budget can also affect an individual's life span. An increase in reproductive effort, for instance, can result in less energy available for

Interaction Between the oxa1 and rmp1 Genes Modulates Respiratory Complex Assembly and Life Span in Podospora anserina
Genetics
; ABSTRACT A causal link between deficiency of the cytochrome respiratory pathway and life span was previously shown in the filamentous fungus Podospora anserina. To gain more insight into the relationship between mitochondrial function and life span, we have constructed a strain carrying a

Drugs lengthen worm's life span.(Biology)(Brief Article)
Science News
; A class of antiseizure drugs slows aging and increases life span in the roundworm Coenorhabditis elegans, researchers have found. Because C. elegans has a naturally short life span--about 2 weeks, on average--scientists frequently use the species to explore aging. Previous studies have identified
