Dr. William J. Dignam, a founding member of the UCLA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and former senior associate dean for Academic Affairs at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, died Dec. 5.

Known for his compassion and professionalism, Dignam was devoted to his patients and estimated that he was the attending physician at 30,000 births. One of his great passions, and a particular focus of his work after attaining emeritus status in 1991, was medical student and resident education.
