SAINT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS?

Did you know that at one time a movement was launched to canonize Christopher Columbus?
In 1882, ten years before the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the New World, a group of Irish Catholics in New Haven, Connecticut, founded the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic men's fraternal organization.
Its mission was to assist the needy and to boost Catholics' pride in their religion, which was frequently challenged in the anti-Catholic climate of late 19th century America. They named their organization after Christopher Columbus because he was Catholic and discovered the Americas.

Dinner time is a job well dunlin ; Coorlee-coorlee", rings the calls of curlew and this year there are hundreds of them on the river. I have photographed them nesting not far from Pinkery (Pinkworthy) Pond on Exmoor, where white fluffy cotton grass adds to the wild moorland scene, a lovely place where one often sees Exmoor ponies, red deer and a fox or two.
