ABSTRACT

Based on an advanced dust devil-scale large-eddy simulation (LES) model, the atmosphere flow of a modeled dust devil in a quasi-steady state was first simulated to illustrate the characteristics of the gas phase field in the mature stage, including the prediction of the lower pressure and higher temperature in the vortex core. The dust-lifting physics is examined in two aspects. Through the experimental data analysis, it is verified again that the horizontal swirling wind can ...

A simple thermodynamical theory for dust devils
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences ; ABSTRACT Based on the heat engine framework, a simple scaling theory for dust devils is proposed and compared to observations. This theory provides a simple physical interpretation for many of the observed characteristics of dust devils. In particular, it predicts the potential intensity and the

Science News ; How to study a dust devil: Sit in your truck on a dry lake bed and wait for a minitornado to spring up within sight. Eyeball its path and guess where it's headed. Science News ; The most drought-ridden wastes of sub-Saharan Africa are almost verdant compared with the planet Mars, which was completely hiddne from view by a global dust storm when the U.S. Mariner 9 spacecraft arrived there in 1971. Doppler Radar Observations of Dust Devils in Texas
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT Analyses of a dust-devil dataset collected in northwest Texas are presented. The data were collected just above the ground at close range with a mobile, W-band (3-mm wavelength) Doppler radar having an azimuthal (radial) resolution of 3-5 m (30 m) at the range of the dust devils. Most dust

Dust devils produce magnetic fields. (Earth Science).(Brief Article)
Science News ; Scientists who chase dust devils report that the tiny twisters can produce a small magnetic field that changes magnitude between 3 and 30 times per second. When grains of sand and clay collide inside a dust devil, they generate electric charges, says William M. Farrell, a geophysicist at NASA's
