Law students and others who persevered with Latin at University will know that sub rosa means in secret or in the strictest confidence. The origin of the expression - literally under the rose - seems to differ according to where the lecturer learned his Latin.
Some refer to the mystical and allegorical nature of the rose, typified by the Rose of Jericho, a plant which flowers intermittently only in certain parts of the Holy Land.
