Electroconvulsive Therapy in Patients with Cardiac Pacemakers

SUMMARY

There are few contraindications to electroconvulsive therapy and it is generally well tolerated. However, electroconvulsive therapy in elderly patients with cardiac pacemakers in situ theoretically presents an increased risk of complications. We undertook a retrospective audit of all patients who received anaesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy between January 1999 and September 2005. There were ten patients who had cardiac pacemakers in situ. They underwent a total of 147 electroconvulsive therapy treatments. In 146 out of the 147 treatments, the anaesthesia proceeded uneventfully. ...
