ABSTRACT

Tandemly arrayed duplicate genes are prevalent. The maize A1-b haplotype is a tandem duplication that consists of the components, α and β. The rate of meiotic unequal recombination at A1-b is ninefold higher when a homolog is present than when it is absent (i.e., hemizygote). When a sequence heterologous homolog is available, 94% of recombinants (264/281) are generated via recombination with the homolog rather than with the sister chromatid. In addition, 83% (220/264...

Structural analysis of the maize Rp1 complex reveals numerous sites and unexpected mechanisms of local rearrangement
Plant Cell ; Rp1 is a complex disease resistance locus in maize that is exceptional in both allelic variability and meiotic instability. Genomic sequence analysis of three maize BACs from the Rp1 region of the B73 inbred line revealed 4 Rp1 homologs and 18 other gene-homologous sequences, of which at least 16
Rearrangements in the Cf-9 Disease Resistance Gene Cluster of Wild Tomato Have Resulted in Three Genes That Mediate Avr9 Responsiveness
Genetics ; ABSTRACT Cf resistance genes in tomato confer resistance to the fungal leaf pathogen Cladosporium fulvum. Both the well-characterized resistance gene Cf-9 and the related 9DC gene confer resistance to strains of C. fulvum that secrete the Avr9 protein and originate from the wild tomato species
Comparative sequence analysis of the Sorghum Rph region and the maize Rp1 resistance gene complex
Plant Physiology ; A 268-kb chromosomal segment containing sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genes that are orthologous to the maize (Zea mays) Rp1 disease resistance (R) gene complex was sequenced. A region of approximately 27 kb in sorghum was found to contain five Rp1 homologs, but most have structures indicating that
Recruitment of Novel Calcium-Binding Proteins for Root Nodule Symbiosis in Medicago truncatula1[W][OA]
Plant Physiology ; Legume rhizobia symbiotic nitrogen (N^sub 2^) fixation plays a critical role in sustainable nitrogen management in agriculture and in the Earth's nitrogen cycle. Signaling between rhizobia and legumes initiates development of a unique plant organ, the root nodule, where bacteria undergo endocytosis
Nearly Identical Paralogs: Implications for Maize (Zea mays L.) Genome Evolution
Genetics ; ABSTRACT As an ancient segmental tetraploid, the maize (Zea mays L.) genome contains large numbers of paralogs that are expected to have diverged by a minimum of 10% over time. Nearly identical paralogs (NIPs) are defined as paralogous genes that exhibit ≥98% identity. Sequence analyses of
