INTRODUCTION

This article aims to provide an overview of some of the major developments in Australian maritime and shipping law in 2005. In the public law area the enforcement of fisheries laws was a major issue in both the Southern Ocean, where whaling is the hot issue, and also in Australia's northern waters, where many Indonesian fishing boats continue to fish illegally in the Indian Ocean and the Arafura and Timor Seas.
