The Oxford calendar boasts a new ritual. After Eights Week, May Morning, Encaenia and Commem Balls comes the budgetary crisis banquet. Rich alumni gather periodically, usually in London, under the aegis of a generous benefactor. The wine is good and jokes are about vintages, such as Balliol '61 or Trinity '74. Amid much talk of 'this not being a fund-raising event', the latest vice-chancellor is permitted a few minutes to describe his financial despair and latest corporate strategy. The cry goes up, 'The government must do something.' A jolly time is had by all.
