Nineteenth-century American musicians looked to Europe for standards in performance. Undeniably, a European training was prerequisite to receiving an American stamp of approval. As a result, many American pianists fortunate enough to study abroad did so at the beginning stages of their training when their minds were most impressionable. Consequently they became mere imitators of their teachers. Happily, Edward Alexander MacDowell (18611908) was an important exception.
