Who Is ... Charles Dwight Sigsbee?

Charles Dwight Sigsbee was born on Jan. 16, 1845 in Albany, N.Y. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1859, and graduated in 1863.

In 1864, Sigsbee was given a special mention for gallant action during the battle of Mobile Bay. Following this, Sigsbee was stationed in Asiatic squadron until 1871, when he served as an officer for the Hydrographic Office and the Coast Survey. During this time, Sigsbee completed the first underwater survey of the Gulf, and in honor of this accomplishment, the deepest part of the Gulf was named Sigsbee Deep.
