SURVEY OF CONTEMPORARY NAVY AND MARINE personnel as to what were the most important amphibious assaults of World War II in the Pacific would yield several answers. Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa would be among the four most prominent, but it is doubtful that many would mention the skillful execution of the Bougainville operation (in which initial landings took place on 1 November 1943 and, according to the 3rd Marine Division after-action report, ended on 28 December 1943).
