Calcium can ameliorate Na+ toxicity in plants by decreasing Na+ influx through nonselective cation channels. Here, we show that elevated external [Ca^sup 2+^] also inhibits Na+-induced K+ efflux through outwardly directed, K+-permeable channels. Noninvasive ion flux measuring and patch-clamp techniques were used to characterize K+ fluxes from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) root mature epidermis and leaf mesophyll under various Ca^sup 2+^ to Na+ ratios. NaCl-induced K+ efflux was not relat...

Na^sup +^/H^sup +^ exchange activity in the plasma membrane of Arabidopsis1
Plant Physiology ; In plants, Na^sup H^sup +^ exchangers in the plasma membrane are critical for growth in high levels of salt, removing toxic Na^sup +^ from the cytoplasm by transport out of the cell. The molecular identity of a plasma membrane Na^sup H^sup +^ exchanger in Arabidopsis (SOS1) has recently been
Root Plasma Membrane Transporters Controlling K^sup +^/Na^sup +^ Homeostasis in Salt-Stressed Barley1[C][W]
Plant Physiology ; Plant salinity tolerance is a polygenic trait with contributions from genetic, developmental, and physiological interactions, in addition to interactions between the plant and its environment. In this study, we show that in salt-tolerant genotypes of barley (Hordeum vulgare), multiple mechanisms
Sodium fluxes through nonselective cation channels in the plasma membrane of protoplasts from Arabidopsis roots
Plant Physiology ; Sodium Fluxes through Nonselective Cation Channels in the Plasma Membrane of Protoplasts from Arabidopsis Roots1 The aim of the present work was to characterize Na^sup +^ currents through nonselective cation channels (NSCCs) in protoplasts derived from root cells of Arabidopsis. The procedure of
Adaptation of H+ -pumping and plasma membrane H+ ATPase activity in proteoid roots of white lupin under phosphate deficiency
Plant Physiology ; Adaptation of H^sup Pumping and Plasma Membrane H^sup +^ ATPase Activity in Plasma Meoid Roots of White Lupin under Phosphate Deficiency1 White lupin (Lupinus albus) is able to adapt to phosphorus deficiency by producing proteoid roots that release a huge amount of organic acids, resulting in
An Arabidopsis thaliana Plasma Membrane Proton Pump Is Essential for Pollen Development
Genetics ; ABSTRACT The plasma membrane proton pump (H^sup ATPase) found in plants and fungi is a P-type ATPase with a polypeptide sequence, structure, and in vivo function similar to the mammalian sodium pump (Na^sup K^sup ATPase). Despite its hypothetical importance for generating and maintaining the
