ABSTRACT

Orfelia fultoni is the only bioluminescent dipteran (Mycetophilidae) found in North America. Its larvae live on stream banks in the Appalachian Mountains. Like their Australasian relative Arachnocampa spp., they build sticky webs to which their bioluminescence attracts flying prey. They bear two translucent lanterns at the extremities of the body, histologically distinct from the single caudal lantern of Arachnocampa spp., and emit the bluest bioluminescence recorded for lumi...

Seattle Post-Intelligencer (Seattle, WA) ; Byline: DOREE ARMSTRONG Special to the P-I Most people know that fireflies have a glowing abdomen that looks really pretty at night, but did you know that the decapod shrimp actually vomits light into the face of predators so it can get away? New instrument sheds light on bioluminescence: a WHOI engineer invents a device to measure a critical but elusive ocean phenomenon.
Oceanus ; On a 1995 research cruise in the Arabian Sea, WHOI Research Engineer Paul Fucile asked an innocent question, just to satisfy his curiosity. He had been watching a three-person Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) team use a deck-mounted winch and a steel wire to maneuver a half-ton, golf-cart-sized,

Bioluminescent reporter bacterium for toxicity monitoring in biological wastewater treatment systems
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Toxic shock due to certain chemical loads in biological wastewater treatment systems can result in death of microorganisms and loss of floc structure. To overcome the limitations of existing approaches to toxicity monitoring, genes encoding enzymes for light production were inserted to a
