What Fraction of a Kelvin Wave Incident on a Narrow Strait Is Transmitted?
|
ABSTRACT
Parameters governing the fraction of a Kelvin wave transmitted through a narrow gap or channel include time dependence, nonlinearity, friction, and strait geometry, yet only limited regions of this parameter space have been explored. Linear inviscid models (which neglect advective and Motional terms in the momentum equations) predict that 100% of the volume flux of a low-frequency Kelvin wave or steady boundary current incident on a narrow strait is transmitted, even when the ...

Uniform Asymptotics for the Linear Kelvin Wave in Spherical Geometry
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT The Kelvin wave is the gravest eigenmode of Laplace's tidal equation. It is widely observed in both the ocean and the atmosphere. In the absence of mean currents, the Kelvin wave depends on two parameters: the zonal wavenumber s (always an integer) and Lamb's parameter ε. An

Seasonality and Regionality of the Madden-Julian Oscillation, Kelvin Wave, and Equatorial Rossby Wave
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO), Kelvin wave, and equatorial Rossby (ER) wave-collectively called intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs)-are investigated using a 25-yr record of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) measurements as well as the associated dynamical fields. The ISO modes are

Intraseasonal Variability in a Dry Atmospheric Model
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT A long integration of a primitive equation dry atmospheric model with time-independent forcing under boreal winter conditions is analyzed. A variety of techniques such as time filtering, space-time spectral analysis, and lag regressions are used to identify tropical waves. It is evident

Observations fo a convectively coupled Kelvin wave in the Eastern Pacific ITCZ
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences
; ABSTRACT A case study of a convectively coupled Kelvin wave in the eastern Pacific intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is presented, as observed during the 1997 Pan American Climate Studies (PACS) Tropical Eastern Pacific Process Study (TEPPS). The large-scale convective envelope associated with

Basin Modes in a Tropical-Extratropical Basin*
Journal of Physical Oceanography
; ABSTRACT The full spectrum of basin modes in a tropical-extratropical basin is studied comprehensively in a linear shallow-water system. Two sets of least-damped basin modes are identified. At the low-frequency end is the planetary wave basin mode, whose period is determined by the cross-basin time
