It was Cleopatra e Cesare, by Frederick the Great's Kappelmeister, Carl Heinrich Graun (1703-59), that inaugurated the Berlin Opera in 1742. Along with works by Johann Adolph Hasse, Graun's Italian opere serie dominated the mid-eighteenthcentury lyric stages of Germany, and if Cleopatra is any indication, there could be untold treasures awaiting revival.
